Abstract: Since 1980, the U.S. has sustained 279 separate billion-dollar weather and climate disasters. The total cost of these 279 events exceeds $1.825 trillion. Opportunity exists, to fund and finance resilience that could help to stabilize or reduce these costs in the future. There are cost effective ways to prepare for and recover from these events. Joyce's session will provide cases of resilience related finance in the US as well relevant trends in resilience finance and tools to fund and finance a climate change resilient future. Resilience-Related Market Drivers Impacting A&E to be discussed include: Risk Transfer, Liability, Financial Impacts; and transparency, Disclosure of Material Risks. Tools to fund and finance climate change resilience to be discussed include: Municipal revenue and general obligation bonds; and equity investments.
Bio: Joyce Coffee, LEED AP, is founder and President of Climate Resilience Consulting, a social enterprise that works with clients to create practical strategies that enhance markets and communities through adaptation to climate change. Coffee has 25 years of leadership experience in government, private, nonprofit, philanthropic and academic sectors. She has worked with over 200 institutions to create and implement climate-related resilience strategies. Specific areas of emphasis include resilience strategy, resilience finance, resilience measurement and social equity. She is an appointed director or chair of over ten nonprofit boards and initiatives.
Joyce received a B.S. in biology, environmental studies and Asian studies from Tufts University and a Masters in city planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she has been appointed to a five year term on the Urban Studies and Planning Visiting Committee based on her dedication to saving lives and improving livelihoods in the face of climate disruption to America’s communities.
